Santa Maria Island

The island of Santa Maria is the only permanently inhabited archipelago in addition to the main La Maddalena and Caprera. And 'situated between Razzoli and Budelli, from which it is separated by narrow and short arms of the sea: the pass of Asinelli makes approximately 50cm of depth.

The remains of the ancient monastery built by Benedictine monks, first to settle permanently in the Archipelago in the twelfth century, have been incorporated in the home of a shepherd who resides and works in this island. Just by the Madonna, which was the name of the church attached to the convent, hence the name.

Not far from here, on the southern coast of Santa Maria, opens the most famous and beautiful beach on the island, Cala Santa Maria, over 200 meters of white sand extremely thin, lapped by crystal clear waters.Behind the beach is the Marshes, a small brackish water marsh nesting in several avian species. From the lighthouse at Punta Filetto, reachable by a path that starts from Santa Maria Cove, you can enjoy a splendid view of the archipelago and the Straits of Bonifacio.
